Items from the personal wardrobe of Dame Vivienne Westwood are to be auctioned at Christie’s this summer.
The landmark sale will help to raise funds for major causes championed by late British designer, with the entirety of proceeds going to The Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Greenpeace.
In a statement Christie’s say over 200 lots will be presented across two auctions.
A live sale will take place in London on June 25th, whilst an online auction will run from June 14th – 28th.
Items will also be on display as part of a free exhibition open to the public at Christie’s, King Street in London, from June 14th – 24th.
Vivienne Westwood: The Personal Collection comprises the personal wardrobe of the late fashion designer, and includes some of the most important iconic looks that she created and wore during the last four decades of her life.
The wardrobe, which only contains garments, shoes and jewellery by Westwood’s eponymously named fashion house, is recognised as historically and culturally significant — the earliest piece coming from the Witches collection for autumn/winter 1983/84.
Adrian Hume-Sayer, a collections director at Christie’s, said: “This sale is without precedent and will always be without equal. The personal wardrobe of arguably Britain’s greatest ever fashion designer is pretty incredible. It’s a sort of once in a lifetime thing.”
Recognised as one of the most important British fashion designers of all time, Vivienne used her influence to address some of the gravest issues facing humanity today.
She established The Vivienne Foundation to partner with NGOs with similar aims: “to create a better society and halt climate change”.
