From influencers to imitators, once these trends gained momentum, there was no stopping them. We dive into the world of Addison Rae, dances, effects, slow-mo, live-streaming, gifts and millions of likes to rank the top five biggest TikTok Fashion Trends of 2022. This article may inspire you to nostalgically revisit your favourite trends, cringe over the ones you just couldn’t stand and get thinking about which trend you might help to create next year…
1. Girl Boss
Think Zara blazers, long coats, knee-high boots, gold jewellery and a designer handbag, the ‘Boss Girl’ trend encapsulates the hard-work, early-career status of thousands of young people aspiring to be (you guessed it…) the ‘boss’.
This is power dressing meets Gen-Z, a nod of the head to those epic suits of the ’80s with enough of a 2000s vibe thrown in. Inspiration includes Jennifer Anniston’s wardrobe during her time with Ralph Lauren on ‘Friends’, Blair’s classic smart dresses from ‘Gossip Girl’, Molly-Mae’s PLT world domination, and of course, Matilda Djerf’s trouser suits.
2. Cottagecore
Imagine that you’re a young girl living in the English countryside, waking up in a wooden four-poster bed to a house heated by an AGA. When you go downstairs, letting yourself out of the forest-green front door to collect fresh berries for breakfast, what do you dress yourself in?
This trend saw the freedom of unbrushed hair and pale ribbons, bare feet and plaid. It was a return to the romantic era of literature, inspired by Pride and Prejudice, and a simpler way of living. Think cotton, paisley, bows, peter-pan collars, pastel, puffy sleeves, and the only accessory you’d need, of course – a book.
3. Mamma Mia Summer
With a summer that wasn’t limited by COVID-19 restrictions, the opportunity to go on holiday, soak up the sun, enjoy the sea and make millions of TikToks in ‘Mamma Mia’ inspired outfits presented itself. Old jeans were cast away for flares, T-shirts became crochet halter necks and hair went from limp to crimp.
Whether actually cruising around a Greek Island, or from any pool anywhere in the world, or even the local pub, the fun of the 1970s hit us hard. Relaxed denim was in, bright colours and patterns made their mark and we all wished for the azure of the Mediterranean to accompany the fit!
4. Clean Girl
The ‘clean girl’ fashion trend can be summed up in three words: ‘off duty model’. It involved looking totally and entirely put together, without putting in any effort. As in, you wake up looking perfect, find the nearest clean outfit to throw on and jog off to get your morning detox juice. Not only does she have her life together, the ‘clean girl’ is also tidy in her living space, stays active and looks after her health and fitness.
Think matching gym sets, puffer jackets, Birkenstocks and white T-shirts. Fashioned with gold hoop earrings, Uggs, a slicked back bun and fluffy brows, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner led the way.
5. Soft Girl
Truly immortalised by the power of TikTok, the ‘soft girl’ look is deliberately feminine, with accents of shimmer, glitter and sparkle. Delicate floral prints atop pastel pinks, blues and greens. Key staples include white tank tops, tennis skirts, cardigans and crop tops, small bags and layered necklaces.
Perhaps deceptive, though the name ‘soft girl’ implies a vulnerability, this trend actually reclaims the joy of dressing in a very feminine way, empowering the wearers to enjoy the clothes they’re in. The looks are simple but coordinated, effortless but thought through, tight but also comfortable and ultimately, they are entirely unapologetic.
