Mark your calendars, as Royal Ascot takes place from 20th June to 24th of June this year. As ever, the event is equally as significant for fashion enthusiasts as it is for followers of horse racing, making it a must-attend occasion for many.
Royal Ascot is also well-known for its official Style Guide, laying out the dress code for racegoers. There are definitely no jeans and t-shirts allowed here and both men and women are expected to adhere to the official guidelines, with plenty of room for personal style and expression of course.
The Style Guide is updated every year to reflect changing fashions and attitudes. For 2023, the Style Guide has been renamed the Royal Ascot Lookbook, suggesting a move away from rules and regulations towards more of a fashion-led, inspirational fashion editorial
Royal Ascot Lookbook 2023
The lookbook offers six fashion edits to give racegoers outfit inspiration: Luxe, Tailoring, Pre-Loved & Rental, Vintage, High Street and Emerging Designer.
Luxe
For those who like to indulge in the luxurious side of life, the Luxe Edit features glamorous silk gowns, velvet suiting, and morning dress, with looks from Roksanda, Gucci, and Favourbrook
Tailoring
From traditional tailoring to contemporary colour block suits, the Tailoring Edit includes pieces from Zimmermann, Edward Sexton and RXQUETTE.
Pre-Loved & Rental
It’s safe to say that Royal Ascot is not known for its pre-loved fashion, so including this edit in this year’s LookBook shows just how much society is turning away from fast fashion and valuing more sustainable practices. This second-hand and rental edit features affordable favourites including HURR, Selfridges Rental, Moss Bros and Oliver Brown.
Vintage
Sticking with the sustainable theme, there’s also an entire edit dedicated to vintage fashion. Featuring designer pieces from decades gone by, some of the iconic labels in the Vintage Edit include Vivienne Westwood and Thierry Mugler.
High Street
If you think you need to shell out for a designer suit or gown to attend Ascot, think again! The High Street Edit includes gorgeous dresses and tailoring from Ascot’s Official Ladieswear Sponsor LK Bennett, as well as Sandro, All Saints and Reformation.
Emerging Designer
Finally, Royal Ascot has given the opportunity to some up-and-coming fashion designers to get their looks some exposure. Designers featured in this edit include S.S. Daley, Victoria Grant, Richard Quinn, Charles Jeffery LOVERBOY and Ahluwalia.
The new LookBook shows that Royal Ascot is really embracing the wider concept of fashion, and encouraging racegoers to celebrate their own individual personal style. However, all attendees are still expected to follow the guidelines laid out in the official dress code.
Royal Enclosure Dress Code
The Royal Enclosure has the strictest dress code, and racegoers are expected to dress in formal daywear defined as the following:
For women:
- Dresses and skirts of “modest” length (no shorter than knee-length)
- Straps must be at least one inch wide
- Spaghetti straps, strapless, halter neck, and off-the-shoulder styles are not permitted, even if covered with a jacket or pashmina
- Midriffs must be covered
- Trouser suits are permitted as long as they are full length to the ankle and of matching material and colour
- Jumpsuits or culottes can be worn as an alternative to a dress but must fall below the knee and are subject to the same guidelines as dresses
- A hat or headpiece with a solid base at least 4 inches in diameter must be worn
- Fascinators are not permitted.
For men:
Black or grey morning dress should be worn including:
- A waistcoat
- Tie (cravats and bow ties not permitted)
- Black or grey top hat (may only be removed in an enclosed external sitting area within the Royal Enclosure Gardens, restaurants, private clubs, and private gardens, terraces, and balconies)
- Black shoes worn with socks
- Top hats must not be customised with ribbons or bands
- Novelty waistcoats and ties are not permitted, however an exception is made for “patriotic” designs based on national flags.
For Children:
Girls aged 10-17 should adhere to the ladies’ dress code, although they are permitted to wear a headpiece or fascinator instead of a hat.
Boys aged 10-17 can wear morning dress as per the gentlemen’s dress code, or a dark-coloured lounge suit with a shirt and tie.
Queen Anne and Village Enclosure Dress Code
The rules are relaxed slightly for visitors to the Queen Anne and Village Enclosure, but formal wear should still be worn.
For women:
- A hat, headpiece or fascinator must be worn at all times
- Strapless, Bardot, off-the-shoulder, and one-shoulder dresses and tops are not permitted
- Trouser suits must be full length and jumpsuits must fall below the knee. Both must adhere to neckline regulations for dresses and tops.
- Midriffs must be covered
- Shorts are not permitted.
For men:
- A full-length suit with a collared shirt and tie should be worn
- Jackets and trousers should match
- Bow ties and cravats are not permitted except in the Village Enclosure
- Socks must be worn and should cover the ankle
- Jeans and trainers are not permitted.
- Chinos are permitted in the Village Enclosure only.
For children:
Children aged 17 and under should be dressed for a formal occasion. Smart summer dresses are suggested for girls and boys over the age of 9 should wear a suit or jacket with a shirt and tie. Younger boys should be dressed smartly but do not have to wear a jacket or tie. A hat or fascinator is not compulsory for girls.
Windsor Enclosure
There is no official dress code for the Windsor Enclosure, but all visitors are asked to dress smartly. Women are encouraged to wear a hat or fascinator and men a jacket with a collared shirt and full-length trousers.
General Guidelines
Fancy dress and novelty or branded clothing is not permitted for men, women, or children anywhere on site.
Visitors from overseas are welcome to wear National Dress or Service Dress.
