Museum of London extends Fashion City exhibition

The Museum of London Docklands has revealed an extended run for “Fashion City: How Jewish Londoners shaped global style,” spotlighting the pivotal role Jewish creators played in establishing London as a key fashion hub. Now open until 7th July 2024, the exhibit includes a special free ticket offer for students during April and May.

“Fashion City” explores the journey from the East End’s tailors to the high-end couture of the West End, narrating the impact of Jewish designers, craftsmen, and merchants in crafting London’s iconic fashion identity. These individuals, behind some of the 20th century’s most iconic looks, became industry leaders and established retail brands that endure on today’s high streets.

Notable items featured are Princess Diana’s coats and attire from the beloved character Dot Cotton of “EastEnders.” Key pieces include the legendary Mr Fish maxi-smoking dress with beaded panels, a historical Rosenthal, Jacob & Co bag from 1881-1892 possibly owned by Queen Victoria or Princess Louise, and creations from ‘milliner millionaire’ Otto Lucas, who significantly influenced British fashion’s global stature in the mid-20th century, including hats that appeared on the cover of British Vogue. The exhibition concludes with a tribute to the myriad contributors who have affirmed London’s status as a fashion capital, complemented by a book filled with personal stories from visitors, enriching the narrative since its opening in October.
