Ten years ago, she had a shoulder operation. The slings that she had to wear were itchy, uncomfortable, made with men’s proportions in mind, and made of plastic materials that, she realised, would outlive us all. As lightbulb moments go, it wasn’t enjoyable — but it was a valuable one nonetheless.
