1. Born on July 26th 1982 in Newarthill, a working-class village in Scotland, Christopher is the youngest of five children to an engineer and draughtsman father, and housewife mother.
2. He is a Leo.
3. As a child Kane attended Taylor High School – a Roman Catholic comprehensive secondary school in New Stevenston, Motherwell, Scotland.
4. Whilst still in college he worked for designers Russell Sage and Giles Deacon, and attracted the attention of Donatella Versace by winning the Lancôme Colour Award in 2005. The following year he won the Harrods Design Award for his MA Graduate collection.
5. He relocated to London in 2000 to study at Central Saint Martins, where he completed a foundation course in fine arts along with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fashion design. He graduated in 2006 and started working as a consultant for Versace.
6. Kane established his namesake label in 2006, with his sister Tammy Kane (who studied at the Scottish College of Textile Design) running the financial side of the business, and also assisting in his fabric creation and design process.
7. His first independent show, presented on September 20th 2006, consisted of super-short bandage dresses in neon shades. The collection was lauded by prominent international fashion critics, and credited by various sources as a major contributor to summer 2007’s ‘fluoro’ trends.
8. In 2006, he launched a capsule collection for British high-street clothing store Topshop.
9. Kane showed his first collection as part of London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2007.
10. In 2007, he designed the costumes for Kylie Minogue’s ‘2 Hearts’ music video.
11. Kane created limited-edition jewellery for Swarovski in 2007. His Purple Rock necklace and pendant set design was modelled by Naomi Campbell.
12. Known to be a passionate promoter of his home country, Christopher was appointed as an ambassador for VisitScotland in January 2008.
13. His 2009 spring collection broke all records, and was sold out within 24 hours of the launch at Net-a-Porter. In the same year he was the focus of a BBC 2 documentary Raising Kane: Fashion’s New Star.
14. In 2010 he won the first ever Vogue Fashion Fund of £200,000 and a year’s worth of mentoring.
15. Aside from running his eponymous line, Christopher designed the Versus label for Versace from 2009 to 2012.
16. Kane showcased his first collection of menswear in Paris in 2011.
17. In 2013, he sold a 51% stake in the company to the Kering luxury group (then known as PPR), buying that stake back again in June 2018.
18. In August 2014, he was one of 200 public figures who were signatories to a letter to The Guardian opposing Scottish independence in the run-up to September’s 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
19. Kane launched the More Joy collection in 2019 – a lifestyle and fashion extension of his eponymous brand. The line draws inspiration from themes of self-expression and empowerment.
20. Christopher has won numerous accolades for his work, including Young Designer of the Year at the 2006 Scottish Fashion Awards, the British Fashion Council’s New Designer of the Year award in 2007, Collection of the Year in 2009, and Women’s Wear Designer of the Year in 2013.
21. Kane admits to collecting name cards, and place settings from every dinner party he attends.
22. He told the BFC his ideal client would be: “a real individual and a keen follower of fashion. She maybe works in the industry or another creative field. Age doesn’t really concern me; I’m more interested in personality and the way a woman carries herself.”
23. His favourite film is The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie starring the late Dame Maggie Smith.
24. He was once asked to design a dress inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland film to be displayed in the windows of French department store Printemps.
25. Kane says ‘Illuminations’ by American singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie is one of his all-time favourite albums.
