Michael Douglas has been a professional hairdresser for over 30 years, styling hair for celebrities and supermodels around the world, as well as sharing his expertise on TV, radio and social media.
Having quickly established himself in the high stakes hair styling circuit, tending to the tresses of the world’s most famous supermodels including Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Yasmin Le Bon, Michael moved through the fashion week calendar year on year as a go-to name for styling, before embarking on editorial shoots for the likes of Vogue, Glamour, Grazia, Marie Claire and working on global beauty campaigns for famous beauty houses.
As the founder of mdlondon, Michael uses his vast wealth of knowledge to empower “audiences with the guidance and tools to achieve their dream hair at home”. The newly launched and innovative mdlondon BLOW Hairdryer, alongside Douglas’ curated edit of products and DIY tutorials, promises to give customers the hair they’ve always wanted.
We caught up with Michael Douglas for the latest edition of our ‘My London’ interview series.
Favourite neighbourhood:
It’s got to be Soho. I still find it edgy, diverse and exciting… maybe the last remaining independent neighbourhood in central London. It’s also where I’ve based my business.
Favourite place for brunch:
I don’t really do brunch, so I’m going to say my favourite place to go for lunch is Randall & Aubin on Brewer Street. My go-to dish is Spaghetti Vongole, with a glass of Rosé and ice on the side.
Best coffee in London:
I’d have to say Grind. There are a few dotted around London, but I mainly have the DIY pods… they never let me down!
Favourite gallery or museum:
It has to be the National Portrait Gallery; it’s the sheer scale of some of the works and the fascinating stories of the subjects that I find so incredibly impressive.
Tell us a secret:
I have a playlist with artists including Barry Manilow, Phil Collins and Simply Red. I named it ‘Guilty’ and I’ve never told anybody about it before… oops!
Favourite place to shop:
I have a major addiction to leather jackets from All Saints. I currently own eight!
Favourite place to find inspiration:
To be honest I’d have to say Instagram. I seem to have hit an algorithm sweet spot at the moment that’s serving me up a steady stream of original products and ideas.
Best London destination for a date:
Oh, without a doubt it has to be Ronnie Scott’s! The 9.15pm session is always a great idea, but get there earlier for a few drinks and bite to eat first.
Favourite park:
Primrose Hill. Not just for the incredible views, but the summit is where The Rolling Stones signed their first record deal so plenty of history too!
Favourite food market:
That’s a no brainer, Berwick Street.
Your sanctuary in the city:
Where I am right now in my office/studio on Brewer Street. We took over a pretty traditional looking workspace, and refurbished it into a much more aesthetically pleasing space which is also very comfortable. I love being at work!
What inspires you?
The streets and people of Soho never fail to inspire me, I have had many a creative idea come to me when walking through and people watching.
This season I’m loving…
The N.Peal + Pantone collection of cashmere jumpers. Love them all but my absolute favourite is the magenta.
