Before visiting a movie theater or downloading a new video game, you are most likely first and foremost drawn in via the theatrical trailer.
In many ways, there are parallels between the levels of work and creativity required to build a video game that it also takes to craft the trailer for it. Without the latter, the game might fail to reach as many gamers as it would like. Few know the importance of a powerful and effective trailer than video game trailer editor Yinwen “Wendy” Mu, who has been tackling the field with unmatched originality and enthusiasm for her craft. As one of the best video editors in the business, it’s been a long climb to the heights that Mu has reached.
Originally from Beijing, China, Mu grew up with an undying love for film and longed to work in the entertainment industry in the U.S. Fostering a passion for strong, unique characters, she reveled in clever, quality storytelling, enjoying everything from classic films like Sense of Woman (1992) to brilliant, revolutionary sitcoms such as Seinfeld (1989–1998). She found the same love for strong characters not just in film but also in video games. Fueled by passion, Mu attended Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA, and graduated with an MFA in Film and Television. Now, she is a successful video game trailer editor working on the top video games from around the world.

Of course, transitioning from film and television production to video game trailer editing took some work. Mu had to drastically alter her perspective but ultimately discovered many similarities between editing films and video game trailers. These similarities, she says, are found in the same element that drew her to the industry: strong characters. Once Mu opened up to video game characters having unique color palettes, costumes, behaviors, habits, and dialogue as any other character, she dove head-first into her work. After familiarizing herself with the video game world, Mu found herself steeped in projects, bringing her distinctive taste, vision, and appreciation for the values of cinema to her trailers.
Bringing her film perspective to video game production adds a cinematic aesthetic that genuinely sets Mu’s work apart from others in the industry. Each trailer she works on emanates with her passion for the film and video game worlds, leading her to some monumental projects. Today, Mu edits game trailers for popular titles like Apex Legends, Football Club Mobile (FIFA Mobile), Madden Mobile, and multiple AAA game trailers. Her projects have received praise on social media while serving to help her achieve significant milestones in her career, filled with invaluable lessons and experiences along the way.
Yinwen Mu looks to continue thriving as an editor in the entertainment industry while exploring and honing her skills in this dynamic and creative field. With unlimited potential coupled with a true passion for game production and post-production, it is no surprise that Mu is poised to flourish in this industry for many years to come.
