London’s only craft-jeans maker, Blackhorse Lane Ateliers (BLA) is to open an R&D facility within its factory with the aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the UK denim industry.

The “Laundry” will give BLA, students, and independent designers and brands the opportunity to develop new finishes and washes which would have previously required working with facilities in Italy or Japan.

This technology has never before been available in the UK, and existing denim washing machines are owned by large manufacturing companies, meaning smaller brands and students did not have the opportunity to use it.

Two state-of-the-art machines will be used in the new facility, designed to use less water and chemicals than standard denim washing machines.

Each pair of jeans washed in the new machines will generate a report comparing the energy, water, and stem generated compared to traditional machines.

The Laundry will launch at Blackhorse Lane Ateliers workshop in Coal Drops Yard on 20th April 2023
