Barbie Breaks New Ground with First-Ever Doll with Type 1 Diabetes

FashionBarbie Breaks New Ground with First-Ever Doll with Type 1 Diabetes

Barbie is continuing its push for inclusivity with the launch of its first doll with type 1 diabetes (T1D), part of the brand’s ever-expanding Fashionistas line. Designed in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), the new doll offers children a relatable, empowering figure that reflects real-life medical experiences.

The doll includes accurate diabetes management accessories:

  • Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): Worn on her arm, secured with Barbie-pink heart-shaped tape, paired with a smartphone app for tracking blood sugar.
  • Insulin Pump: Clipped to her waist, representing automated insulin delivery.
  • Blue Polka Dot Outfit: A stylish top and skirt inspired by international diabetes awareness symbols.
  • Pastel Blue Handbag: Perfect for storing snacks or medical supplies.

“Barbie helps shape how children see the world,” said Krista Berger, SVP of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel. “This doll allows more kids to feel seen and understood.”

The launch was celebrated at Peloton Studios NY by instructor and T1D advocate Robin Arzón, who received her own custom Barbie. British model Lila Moss, who also lives with T1D, was similarly honoured.

“To see a Barbie doll that looks like me—even down to my CGM—is surreal,” said Moss. “Representation like this is powerful.”

The doll also featured at the 2025 Breakthrough T1D Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C., where over 170 children from around the world met with policymakers to raise awareness of the condition.

This release adds to Barbie’s ongoing efforts toward inclusivity, joining previous Fashionistas that feature Down syndrome, hearing aids, wheelchairs, and a wide range of skin tones, body types, and styles. In line with Mattel’s sustainability goals, the 2025 range uses 50% ISCC-certified bio-circular plastic and FSC-certified packaging.

The Barbie with Type 1 Diabetes is available now at Mattel Shop and major retailers.
